BRIEF HISTORY OF WEST COAST RAP MUSIC
West Coast Hip Hop or Rap music is sub-genre of hip hop music which describes any artist or music which comes from the West Coast of the United States. It began to dominate Hip Hop in the early 1990s with the birth of G-Funk and the emergence of Suge Knight and Dr. Dre’s Deathrow Records. Regional scenes are Greater Los Angeles Area, San Francisco Bay Area or Greater Seattle Area. In the 2010s, West Coast rap music has now made a comeback with the DJ Mustard pioneered ‘Ratchet’ movement and ‘Hyphy’. It can probably be considered the second most dominant hip hop sub-genre, if not equal to, Trap music (or Southern Hip Hop).
Not much needs to be said here. In 2015, many urban A&Rs are looking to the West Coast scene for new acts to sign. West Coast music has made a huge comeback. Just look at how well songs such as Big Sean’s ’I Don’t F With You’, or an unknown Natalie La Rose’s R&B hit “Somebody” have done. All have that bouncy West Coast vibe or Bay Area sound.
